Sunday Sewing – Blue Log Cabin

Since the green 60's dress and I are still not on talking terms, I decided to finish a UFO and found the patchwork quilt I've been making for Master Little 7. This is a really old UFO and I knew I couldn't put off finishing it any longer, and I'm so glad I've finished it now. It looks GREAT, even if I do say so myself.

So here are all the blocks layed out on the floor.
A close up of a patch, you can see all the different types of fabric I used. Much of the blues were collected over a year, they mostly come from collecting blue fat quarters. I had so much fabric I ended up making way more patches then I needed for one blanket, and can now sew a second quilt for Master Little 2.
The backing fabric is calico. It is not the normal chose for quilters but I think it will last longer in a little boys room and the tea stained colour hides stains much better. Instead of making a fat boarder or the like I've used the same fabric and done more of a simple trim.
And here is Master Little 7 "oh so very happy" with his new quilt.
If you've never done quilting I truly suggest you try it.
Here is a photo of my first ever quilt, for Miss Little 6 (she was 2 when I made this). This quilt is made up of 10"x10" blocks of fabric. Very easy to do.
And the seceret to quilting is one of these little feet, it's 1/4" foot, you should be able to pick on up for all the modern sewing machines but not so sure about the vintage ones. If you have a vintage sewing machine maybe you could let us know, that would be great. You run the edge of the fabric against the right side of the foot and it sews 1/4" from the edge, assuming you cut straight, you get a perfect line. I've also found it great for bias binding and other small edge work.
Happy sewing all you lovely people.

Just a Bit Green

Before I went all retro I was a bit of a greeny. I was and still am the family hippy (and I mean extended family too). Since going vintage I have discovered new ways of being green.

We've always had a compost bin and recycled; in Australia recycling is still not as big as it should be. As a house hold I know we stack up very well compared to others. But it never cease to amaze me how many people I talk to say they do this or that but don't recycle or compost, my favourite is the air-conditioners. We lived in Darwin for a few years on a posting and when you went for a walk down the street all you could hear was the 'werrrrrr' of so many air-conditioners'. People just don't want to make an effort to adapt; we only used ours for an hour or two to cool the room down. But I won't go on or I'll fill a whole post with how much I dislike the thinks.

Getting back to being green and being vintage, and doing them at the same time is easy. Buying vintage often means second hand or preloved and that's a good think. I've also found vintage lovers tend to love the things they own and look after them better, that's good because we have less of a disposable culture about us. In Australia mid-century vintage also meant growing your own food and making as much as you could with your own two hands. So while I can happily say most of our future is preloved we don't yet have a veggie patch or chickens (I'm told these are a must have).

So while we put the enviro bulbs in our vintage lights and stich our own clothes from vintage patterns and fabric, I want to move beyond these tasks to take on the garden. Hopefully I will win.
And if you're not sure how to get a bit vintage green yourself I highly recommend starting with Thrifty 365, it's a great challenge.

This is my front yard as is, it's the wet season so don't mind the dull greyness. As time goes on I hope to post on how I go, cross fingers I do not have a green thumb.

Hope your week ends not as wet as mine, have a good one.

Daily Outfit – Work Wear

Ok so this isn't my normally thing but I just loved what I was wearing today and felt so famine that I thought I would share. Tho I'm not entirely sure how vintage the whole outfit is.

Knit top – Katies, this came to me from my grandmother, bless her soul, who is no longer with us.
Jacket and skirt – Unknown, a lovely hand me down from my mother-in-law.
Blue Scarf – Gregory Ladner form Myer, this was a retail buy. I'm not much of a blue person but I just loved this blue.
Stay-ups – Target, I have them in black and cream and are a must have item for me. They don't have seams but they fit my budget.
Shoes – Oaragini, Just enough heel to look good and still be practical at work.

Sunday Sewing – 60’s Dress

Well I had hoped to finish this last week end but as we all know life never lets things go smoothly. So here I am and it's still not finished, oh well.

It was a toss-up between two patterns, mostly due to the need for a pattern that used little fabric and one that would be totally different to anything else I had sewn yet. I wanted a new challenge for myself. Atomic Dad chose the one I ended up sewing. The fabric is the cream and green I bought when in Sydney and there are only a few meters of it so I have to be careful.
The pattern it's self was missing a few bits but luckily I can work around them.

My first issue with the dress was that it was a size 40 in the old sizes, so I needed to down size it. I didn't do a very good job of this; in fact my mother thought I did a horrid job. Got to love the honesty of mothers. After many fittings and basting and unpicking I'm starting to get some were, I will not let this pattern get the better of me.
I am mostly stuck on the breast area, I have no idea why but I just can't get the right fit. Mother is coming over or I'm going there tomorrow night so she can have another look and we can do a fitting and some basting.
I thought I would also share a gem of a find. It's a vintage hat pattern and I plan to make one to match the dress with the leftover fabric when I'm done. It's on loan from the Cairns Historical Society, one of the lovely ladies there said she remembered making it and to see someone else liked it as much as her. I found it while cataloguing the sewing patterns and books; I have a lot of work to do.

Hope you all had/have a lovely week end.

Delayed and Disappointed

I had planned to spend the week end at home with my children and catch up on some sewing but it was not meant to be.

With employees quitting just before their shifts due to start, bad weather and disappointed children it was not what I plan. I started but didn't get to finish a 60's dress with the green/cream fabric I got on my Sydney trip. Played a few board games with the children and read some books too.

In the end I only got half of what I wanted started and nothing finished and spend half the week end in our cold rooms working.

So if the week goes a bit more smoothly I will have a new dress to post and a bit of other good news.

Hope everyone else had a better week end.

Sorry but I seem to keep leaving my camera at work and can't find my ipod any ware, I think I cleaned up a bit too well. So you will just have to trust me when I say I asked Master Little 7 to pull a name out of a hat, (he thought he was picking dinner) and gave me the name..

HEATHER

Congrats and well done, please email me at j.l.boniface@live.com.au, with the details of wear you would like your prize posted. Or if anyone else would like to shoot an email please feel free.

A Look Inside

Australian Home Beautiful November 1962.

video

I have sewing backed up at the moment and thought a change might be nice, so please enjoy a look into homes of Australia. There is a lot more page then the Australian Home Journals and a lot more adds and article's, I've done my best to fit as much in. As you will see we had and still have a love affair with steel and aluminium, that would be due to our climate and we have access to so much of it.

I didn't put much of the pages from gardening and cooking or children's toys but let me know if anyone would like to see them too.

Have a love day/night.
